Wooden Nickel Program

Food Shed Co-op’s “In the Bag!” Wooden Nickel Program promotes the reuse of shopping bags and reusable containers by rewarding those customers who bring in their own bags (paper, cloth or plastic) or containers (for use in the Bulk Department) and by passing on the money saved to local charitable organizations. It’s a win for everyone!

When customers reuse shopping bags or containers at Food Shed Co-op, they get a wooden nickel for each one. The nickels are then donated through the co-op’s “In the Bag!” giving program. There are two acrylic boxes located at the front of the store designated for two specific local organizations (chosen on a quarterly basis). Customers deposit their wooden nickels into the box of their choice. At the end of each quarter, the nickels are counted and the charities receive a check for the collected amount, up to $250.

This Quarter's Non-Profits

For over 40 years, our mission has been to provide our clients with good nutritional food to help supplement their income by providing food for at least one week.

We know it can be very humbling to seek help, so we work hard to assure you have a dignified and comfortable shopping experience.  Each of our service teams, representing 20 local churches and 3 community organizations, have caring volunteers to help serve you.

Our service area is within the boundaries of School Districts 155 and 47 (i.e., Crystal Lake and some surrounding areas). If you live within this area, you can come to our pantry twice each calendar month. If you live outside this area, we are only allowed to serve you once, and will then direct you to your local pantry for future assistance.

Lost Woods Animal Sanctuary is a nonprofit rescue and state-licensed shelter for small animals located in Crystal Lake, Illinois.  With a mission to save animals and educate people about them, our all-volunteer staff is dedicated to making a big difference for small animals.

Lost Woods Animal Sanctuary rescues pets relinquished by their owners, found as strays, or transferred from other shelters.  The pets are assessed by an exotic vet and treated as necessary, after which they may become adoptable.  Those who are not adoptable for medical, behavioral, or other reasons can stay at Lost Woods for their lifetime.

Every three months Food Shed selects two new 501(c)3 non-profit organizations to be involved in our fundraising efforts. These are chosen from applicants that apply online here. The information gathered includes the following information:

● Name of organization
● 501(c)(3) Tax ID number
● Mission statement
● Category (select one):
    Children / Animal / Environment / Social
● Contact information
● Name
● Email address
