Russell King • Photographer

Russell King is a McHenry County, Illinois–based artist whose photography documents the rural landscapes, barnyards, and agricultural heritage of northern Illinois. A retired civil engineer, King brings a trained eye for structure, balance, and detail to his photographic work, blending technical precision with an appreciation for place.

After retiring, King turned to photography and began an ambitious visual documentation of McHenry County in 2023. Through extensive travel across the region, he photographed more than 450 barnyards, silos, rural landscapes, and distinctive local features. His images serve as a visual record of a working countryside that continues to evolve, preserving scenes that are increasingly rare.

This project led to the publication of a full-color, softcover book, 200 Pictures of Silos and Barns in McHenry County, which highlights the depth and scope of his photographic survey. The exhibit grew naturally from this work, allowing visitors to engage with the imagery at a larger scale.

New Works

In addition to his McHenry County collection, Russell King continues to expand his portfolio with new photographic works from his travels beyond the county. While the locations vary, the themes remain consistent—structure, landscape, and the enduring presence of agricultural life.

These newer photographs reflect an evolving perspective, incorporating broader vistas, changing light conditions, and seasonal contrasts. Together with his earlier work, they demonstrate King’s ongoing commitment to documenting rural America with clarity, respect, and a strong sense of place.
